Vu started Jiu-jitsu in the summer of 2008, at the age of 19. Like many, Vu always wanted to try MMA in High School. He even started kickboxing at the original AKA San Jose location, however, stopped going because it was too crowded.

Prior to joining Sunnyvale, Vu had little to no martial arts experience; however, once he got started with Jiu-Jitsu instantly got hooked on the “gentle art”. Aside from being one of AKA Sunnyvale/One World Jiu Jitsu’s most talented competitors, Vu is a technical instructor and a great friend to many off the mat. He states that it is the people in the gym and just having fun on the mats that keeps him going. Sharing stories, techniques, and thoughts with the team especially after a hard day of training. Vu Tran is a black belt under Mike Prudencio. He teaches the Monday Gi class and the Tuesday No Gi class.

Jake Bell
Jake BellBrazilian Jiu Jitsu Instructor

Jake’s grappling background traces back to his roots in Hawaii where at the tender age of 17 he undertook Judo. He states that he always favored “newaza” or ground techniques, which made the transition to Jiu-Jitsu feel very natural.

Being a black belt at Pearl City High under Roy Kawaji, Jake ultimately went to the world-renowned San Jose State University’s Judo program. It was while going to SJSU that Jake’s journey into Jiu-Jitsu began. At first, he went to the original American Kickboxing Academy (on Camden), going once a week after SJSU Judo practice. It wasn’t until 2009 that Jake started taking Jiu Jitsu seriously and, along with pool of talent from SJSU, would ultimately call One World home. Jake is renowned for his heart and is one of One World Jiu Jitsu’s fiercest competitors. At the same time, in the traditional “808 style”, Jake always remains mellow, calm, humorous and generous with his knowledge on-and-off the mat.
