KICKBOXING

Muay Thai, translated into English as Thai Boxing, is the national sport of Thailand and is a martial art with origins in the ancient battlefield tactics of the Thai army. It evolved from Krabi-Krabong, literally sword and baton, the hand-to-hand tactics of the Thai army.  During the latter half of the 20th century, Muay Thai was exported to many countries and is now practiced by hundreds of thousands of people all over the world.
Muay Thai is a striking martial art that incorporates eight points of contact. When practicing Muay Thai you use your fists, elbows, knees, and feet. Training methods develop power, speed, and cardiovascular endurance.

You will learn how to defend takedowns as well as clinch when an opponent grabs you. Muay Thai is the premier combat sport for striking. You will become proficient through drills, pad work, light sparring, speed bags and shadow boxing.Training at AKA has students wearing boxing gloves, shin guards (optional) on a floor with padded mats. A typical class involves 15 minutes of warm-ups and conditioning followed by 15 minutes of teaching and practicing technique with a willing partner. The last 30 minutes is a mixture of high energy and cardio work.

BOXING

Boxing is the art of striking with your fists. Boxing utilizes a combination of hand-eye coordination, agility, foot speed and cardiovascular endurance. Boxing does a great job of blending speed, power and cardio in one workout. Students will learn the fundamentals of boxing, including stances, movement, and punching techniques. A heavy emphasis is placed on conditioning drills used to increase cardiovascular endurance. Students will also engage in light sparring in order to polish their techniques and movement.Training at AKA has students wearing boxing gloves and training on padded floor mats.  Students work with focus pads, speed bags and punching bags as they train. Cardio and footwork is also worked on during the class to help increase movement. A typical class involves 15 minutes of warm ups and conditioning. Followed by 15 minutes of instruction  and drilling technique with a willing partner. The last 30 minutes is intensive training focusing on the techniques taught in that class. Cardio and calisthenics will wrap up the training session.

MIXED MARTIAL ARTS

Mixed martial arts is a blend of martial arts that includes striking and grappling. The mix of striking and grappling techniques emphasizes that one has to be a complete martial artist in order to compete in mixed martial arts. Mixed martial arts is the evolution of combat sports. It is a seamless form of self-defense that allows an individual the capability to protect oneself on the ground or standing. Mixed martial arts gives you the ability to decide where to take the fight by controlling the transitions through wrestling and Judo. American Kickboxing Academy is a true mixed martial arts academy. We are a worldwide leader and ranked as a top 5 MMA gym in the United States. MMA is a fusion of several martial arts disciplines:

MMA is the evolution of combat sports. MMA is for women, men and children of all ages. It instills discipline, respect, confidence, coordination and increased cardio. MIxed martial arts is excellent for fitness.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art that focuses on grappling and ground fighting. The principle of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend themselves against a bigger, stronger person using leverage & proper technique.Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu emphasizes taking an opponent to the ground & utilizing ground position, sweeps and submission holds involving joint-locks & chokeholds. The premise is that most of the advantage of a larger, stronger opponent comes from superior reach & more powerful strikes, both of which are somewhat negated when grappling on the ground. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is likened to a form of physical chess match when performed by two experienced practitioners. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu can be trained for sports grappling tournaments (gi and no-gi) and mixed martial arts (MMA) competition. Sparring (commonly known as ‘rolling’) & live drilling play a major role in training.

Training at AKA has students wearing a heavy gi on a floor with padded mats. A typical class involves 15 minutes of warm-ups and conditioning followed by 30 minutes of teaching and practicing technique with a willing partner. The last 45 minutes is live sparring against an opponent of equal skill in an attempt to work on technique learned that day and other techniques taught in previous classes.
We also offer No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu on Tuesdays and Thursdays but we would like new students to go to the Gi classes first in order to learn the basics. No-Gi  Jiu-Jitsu is for more advanced practitioners and it is important that new students learn the fundamentals before they start taking the No-Gi class.

Wrestling

Wrestling is a combat sport involving grappling type techniques such as clinch fighting, throws and takedowns, joint locks, pins and other grappling holds. There are a wide range of styles with varying rules with both traditional historic and modern styles. Wrestling techniques have been incorporated into Mixed Martial Arts as well as military hand-to-hand combat systems. At American Kickboxing Academy our wrestling classes will focus on taking opponents to the ground and defending a person from taking us down to the mat.

Kids MMA

American Kickboxing Academy is proud of our award winning mixed martial arts program for kids and juniors. Our starting age for kids is 4 years old. The curriculum is extensive and comprehensive and covers a wide selection of martial arts. Your child will develop into a proficient martial artist that can truly defend themselves.

  • Monday & Tuesday: Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
  • Wednesday: Wrestling and Judo

  • Thursday: Muay Thai and Boxing

Crossfit
